The 1972 Corvette was the last year for the removable rear window. It was also the last C3 vette to come with the LT1 option. Unfortunately due to tougher government regulations the 1972 Corvette coupes go through another power decrease which brings its power down to a staggering 200 horsepower.
By 1973 automakers were being influenced by government and private safety and control companies. There were many new mandates set on automakers and what kind of cars they put out. Due to new limitations and safety measures put on by these organizations, Chevrolet had to comply with the 5 mph safety bumper. The new bumper made safety regulations and was color matched to the body. Since the rear windows on the 1973 Corvettes were no longer removable it allowed Chevy to create more storage space in the rear. Along with more storage Corvette buyers got a newly designed hood with cold air induction ports.
The 1974 Corvette was the last year that came with a 454 big block engine. It was also the last year that the Corvette came with genuine dual exhaust systems. Other then those minor changes the 74 stayed virtually the same. You could have bought a 1974 Corvette convertible for $5,765 back then, now you would be lucky to find a rusty old project vette for that much. But all these set backs didnt stop Chevy from producing a historical muscle car.
1975 marked the last year the Corvette would show itself with its top off until the mid 1980s. Convertibles were out and hardtops were in. the 1975 Corvette came with newly installed catalytic converters on them to meet tightened regulations. 75 wasnt a good year for the vette, producing around a 165 horsepower on its base model, there was a major lack of power in this muscle car.

The 1976 Corvette was in line for some changes. The 76 was the last year for the Stingray emblem. This was the first year that Chevrolet was offering the Corvette in only a couple models, which seemed to do good for Chevy because Corvette sales hit a record high with 46,558 Corvette coupes sold.
With improved sales Chevy upped productions levels for the 1977 Corvette to a whopping 49,213 units. There was no longer an option for leather seats in the 77; they came standard. Along with standard leather seats, Chevrolet now accepted standard Delco radios. Top it all off with a new set of console controls the 1977 Corvette was history in the making.
The 1978 Corvette marked the birth of the new fastback rear window design. Chevy came out with the Silver Anniversary model with came with a two tone paint job. It was a good year for Chevrolet; they were winning a lot of racing and making a name for themselves at the race track. They also put out Limited edition Corvette pace car replicas in commemoration for the 1978 Indianapolis 500. If youre looking for 1978 Corvette pace cars for sale, good luck, their really rear and highly sought after cars.

79 marked the year of major changes and accomplishments for the Corvette. Chevy was winning races and taking the Corvette to the top. The 1979 Corvette got upgraded racing seats which mimicked the ones in the Pace Car at the time. The Corvette logo also got a face lift. Chevy changed to logo to a much sportier crossed checkered flag logo. There was also a horsepower gain this year, nothing major just 5 horsepower but at least its some sort of power gain.
The 1980 Corvette did not do to well. Production levels dropped to approximately 40,000 units. There were more regulations put on muscle cars which lead Chevy to have to build a specific car just for California state regulations. The California Corvette boasted a pathetic 180 horsepower V8 which didnt do much for the vettes image.
The 81 Corvette came with only one engine option, which featured a 350 cubic inch V8 that was putting out around 190 horsepower. The 1981 Corvette was going to be the last year that they offered a manual transmission until 1984 with the introduction of the C4 Corvette. Until then you would have to keep yourself occupied with 190 horsepower and power driver seats.
In 82 Chevy put out a limited collectors edition Corvette hatchback. This was and still is a highly prized collectors item. The base line model for the 1982 Corvette came with a 350 cubic inch engine that was putting out around 200 horsepower. Doesnt sound much now but its definitely an increased compared to the 160 horsepower they had in previous years.
The 1984 Corvette was a turning point in history for the vette. Chevy out did itself with the new C4 Corvette which was the first all new vette in 15 years. But for some the wait was worth it. The new 1984 C4 Corvette housed a 5.7 liter V8 standard which produced around 205 horsepower. However Chevy had more changes in store for the Corvette.

The 1985 Corvette marked the introduction of the tuned port fuel injection which replaced the previous Cross Fire injection system. 85 was a good year for Chevy; in 1985 Car and Driver dubbed the Chevrolet Corvette as Americas fastest production car. Fast wasnt the only thing they had in mind. New technological advancements in suspension components allowed for improved handling for the newer Corvettes.
The 1986 Corvette marked the return of the convertible. It was the first convertible vette since 1975. The power plant remained the same 350 cubic inch engine however there was an increase of power, 250 hp. The 86 Corvettes were also the first year vettes to incorporate new ABS technology.
